Many experts now believe that a person’s emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) may be more important than their IQ and is certainly a better predictor of success, quality of relationships, and overall happiness.

Moreover, according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, emotional intelligence will be one of the top 10 job skills in 2020.

But in order to strengthen your emotional intelligence, you have to know what it is. EQ is more than charisma or personality.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your emotions as well as the emotions of others.

Emotional intelligence consists of four key attributes:

1) Self-awareness – you recognize your own emotions and how they affect your thoughts and behavior, know your strengths and weaknesses, and have self-confidence.

2) Self-management – you’re able to control impulsive feelings and behaviors, manage your emotions in healthy ways, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and adapt to changing circumstances.

3) Social awareness – you can understand the emotions, needs, and concerns of other people, pick up on emotional cues, feel comfortable socially, and recognize the power dynamics in a group or organization.

4) Relationship management – you know how to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well in a team, and manage conflict.
